Week 1 – Paper

•October 9, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Every week I get an awesome e-newsletter from Photojojo (http://photojojo.com) and in last week’s issue there was this:

“Here’s the big idea: You and a buddy each post a photo a day side-by-side. It’s a simple concept but the results are often brilliant.” So, I talked to my photographer buddy Laurie and she’s agreed to play the game. Each Friday morning we’ll post our photos side by side right here. For inspiration we’ll be using a list of traditional wedding gifts. This is week one and that means it’s Paper!

Art Showing At Fromagerie Elgin

•July 3, 2009 • Leave a Comment

I just found out that one of my old dear friends, Dave Ring, will have his most recent artwork on exhibition at the Fromagerie Elgin from July 3 to August 3rd.  All the photographers who are participating in the Worldwide Photowalk on July 18th will have a chance to see Dave’s show entitled “my point of view” as the Fromagerie is our ending location for the walk.

Dave is not only a very talented Fine Artist, but he’s also the gentleman that I credit with giving me my start in graphic and web design.  When I was just a wet-behind-the-ears design newbie, Dave was kind enough to offer tips, tricks and techniques to help me along the way.

Make sure to stop by Fromagerie Elgin and take in his paintings while you’re sampling some of Hazel’s amazing cheeses, wines, coffees and teas!

You can access Dave’s exhibition release here:

Halfway There & Judges Selected

•June 17, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Registrations for Scott Kelby’s 2nd Annual Photowalk are coming in at a steady pace. Today, we hit the halfway mark to our goal of a totally full walk of 50 participants.

And, some good news about the photo judging…I talked to some of the good folks over at Henry’s Camera and they have agreed to help judge the final entries to pick the one outstanding Sudbury photo. That photo will be forwarded on to Scott Kelby to compete in the worldwide contest.

The countdown is on guys!

Worldwide Photowalk Update

•May 27, 2009 • Leave a Comment

After a minor glitch on Monday, Sudbury’s login page is back up and running.   Those of you who were trying to register and couldn’t access the site, my appologies, but it’s all fixed up…

Oh, and we met with Hazel down at Fromagerie Elign and she’s told us, absolutley, without a doubt, yes…end your walk here.  Her location (for those of you who haven’t been there yet) is stunning.  This is a BIG space that is filled with long harvest tables, perfect for talking and sharing.  Her offerings consist of much more than just gourmet cheeses (at very reasonable prices might I add)…she also offers an incredible array of fine coffees and teas, and now, wine.  At one end of the space, there is an informal art display.

The only issue is that her capacity is limited to 40 people at a time.  I know that there are a few of you who have to head out right after the walk, and some of you want to do some shopping at the Farmer’s Market so I don’t see this as a problem.  We just have to make sure to keep moving around so no one can count us!! :)

Operation Photo Rescue

•October 21, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Have you heard about it?  I came across it just a few days ago thanks to my October NAPP newsletter.  It is absolutely fantastic work that these folks have been doing!  We’ve joined the ranks of volunteers in the hopes that we can do a little good as well.

I hope they don’t mind me borrowing their words but they really do say it better than I ever could…

Insurance can replace homes, furniture and automobiles in time of need. However, photographs, which are important pieces of a family’s history, are unprotected. Operation Photo Rescue (OPR) is a volunteer network of professional photojournalists and amateur digital photographers, graphic designers, image restoration artists and others. OPR’s mission is to repair photographs damaged by unforeseen circumstances such as house fires and natural disasters at no cost to the people who own them.

Here are a few of the services we offer:

  • Free restoration of photos damaged by natural disaster
  • Community forum rich with photo restoration resources/tutorials
  • Copy run services to disaster affected areas

I really encourage anyone who has any expertise with photo restoration to jump in and lend a hand.  Everyone always talks about how they would love to help out.  Here’s your chance.  Click the link below, register and get involved in making a difference.

What Is Our Legacy?

•August 16, 2008 • Leave a Comment

I was teaching a class yesterday and talking to my students about the joys of photo restoration…I’d just finished an 18 hour restoration of a class photo from 1928 (if/when I get permission from the owner, I’ll post it in the restoration section of our website).  Many thoughts were roaming around in my head while I was working on the piece as you can imagine.  But, it wasn’t until I was talking in class that this thought occurred to me…what will OUR legacy be?

With the advent of digital photography, families aren’t going for formal portrait sittings as often.  Fewer people have “old fashioned” photo albums.  Digital files corrupt.  People delete.  CDs get lost or damaged.  Computers break.  Will there be anything 100 years from now to document who we were?  Who we loved?  Where we lived?

I can’t tell you how many wonderful hours I’ve spent with my own family’s photos…I’ve been looking at the albums and sorting through boxes of pictures for as long as I can remember.  I have historical family portraits hanging in their original frames throughout the house. Through these recent restoration projects I’ve gained an even deeper respect and fascination with printed photos and am saddened to think that when we are long gone, there may be nothing left to remember us by.
